VOPA Offers a Two-Part Presentation: Your Rights as an Individual with a Disability and How to Acquire Assistive Technology by Stephanie George
Virginia Office for Protection and Advocacy’s (VOPA) two-part presentation begins with an overview of the different rights of individuals with disabilities. Part one touches on what VOPA does to assist individuals with disability discrimination issues, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the Virginians with Disabilities Act. It also addresses specific rights as they pertain to individuals using assistive technology, service animals, interpreters and other accommodations. Finally, part one of the presentation concludes with an overview of self-advocacy and explanation of how VOPA might be able to help you with your issues.
Part two explains what assistive technology is, the different ways to recognize a need for assistive technology and the different resources that can be used to acquire and pay for needed assistive technology. This includes insurance options and outside resources. VOPA staff will bring a box of inexpensive AT items that are examples of useful things that lay around your house that you might not even realize can be useful!
