Disaster Planning

It’s not pleasant to think about, but disasters like Katrina and 9-11 remind us that we should be prepared for disasters. Do you have a plan? The following information includes a Planning Checklist, Recommended Items for a Disaster Supply Kit, Pet and Service Animal Information and Resources (you are welcome to come in and use computers at our office for your research needs). The list really is very practical and we encourage you to gather the recommended items so you, too, can be prepared. Please call us if you have any questions.

Personal Maintenance Allowance by Roberta McEachern

The General Assembly increased the personal maintenance allowance from 100% of SSI to 165% of SSI. That is an increase from $603 to $995 per month effective September 1st 2006. The Personal Maintenance Allowance (PMA) is the amount of unearned income that people who receive Virginia Medicaid home and community based waivers can keep each month for living expenses. The local Department of Social Services was advised of the increase and will be making all adjustments.

If you have any questions on your new patient pay amount, please contact your case worker at the Department of Social services.

From The Executive Director by Mary D. Lopez, Ph.D.

An old friend mistakenly introduced me as a “social worker” a couple of weeks ago. That’s all too often what happens because of misconceptions about where I work. Although there are plenty of social workers who do work at centers for independent living (CILs), it is certainly not the standard. Nor is the standard that we are medical professionals. In fact, CILs do have their roots in people with disabilities struggling to escape the boundaries of medicalization and other kinds of fields where “authorities” or trained professionals are considered to be the experts.
