Video & Reading Library by Pat Scott

We have three additions to our library to let you know about.

No Finish Line - My Life As I See It by Marla Runyan.  Diagnosed in the summer between third and fourth grade, Ms. Runyan lost most of her eyesight to Stargardt’s disease - a degenerative disease that essentially leaves holes in the light-sensitive membrane in the back of the eyes where images are absorbed and translated.  A friend in eighth grade told her to go out for the track team - and she has continued to run - at the World Championships in Seville, Spain, and at the Sydney Olympic Games, finishing eighth in the 1500 meters.Freedom of Movement - Independent Living History and Philosophy by Steven E. Brown, Institute on Disability Culture.  Quoting Mr. Brown, “If someone thinks that the disability rights movement began in 1990 with the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act or the 1970s with the first centers for independent living, how would I explain why I chose to begin with someone who predates those events by several decades.”  Mr. Brown is referring to Franklin Delano Roosevelt, former President, a wheelchair user, and Commander-in-Chief for most of World War II.  Mr. Brown continues, “The solution seemed to be using a general explanation of IL philosophy as a preface to a beginning discussion of the history.”

Disability Etiquette - Tips of Interacting with People with Disabilities by Judy Cohen, Access Resources.  This is a booklet to help anyone, with or without a disability, interact more effectively with people with disabilities.

Feel free to come in and see what we have on the shelves or give us a call and we can mail, fax, or email a copy of the list.  (Address:  Independence Empowerment Center, 9001 Digges Road, Suite 103, Manassas, VA 20110; Phone:  703-257-5400; Fax:  703-257-5043; email:  info@ieccil.org)
