State Reports: How Budget Cuts Will Affect Services in Virginia

from the Coalition of Human Needs website:

In December, the House of Representatives approved a budget bill that makes severe cuts to services for low and moderate-income families. The Senate made small modifications to the bill and now the House must reconsider the bill.

As of February 1, the US House of Representatives is scheduled to take up legislation cutting up to $40 billion in several areas including health care and aid to people with severe disabilities. Medicaid cuts will cause low-income people to lose health care.

A vote for this budget bill will tighten the squeeze on Virginia’s struggling working families, who will receive less medical care at greater cost. Virginia Congressional delegation should reject this failure to protect and invest in its constituents, young and old.

If you would like to vote against the budget cut bill, please contact you U.S. Representative toll-free at 1-800-426-8073. You may also contact the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at 1 (202) 224-3121.

The Coalition on Human Needs has set up a National Call-In Week that will begin January 23, 2006. They have suggested after you’re connected with a staf person from the Representative’s office, tell them:

“My name is _____ and I live in (your town). I would like Representative (name) to vote NO on the budget cuts bill (S.1932). This bill will but billions in vital services and programs, including Medicaid and SSI. Now that Representative (name) has had time to read and understand the full harm of this bill, I urge him/her to vote against it.”
