Our Short-Term Deaf Advocate by Deborah Titus

Let me introduce myself. I am a Friend of the Disabled Community, a Connection to the Disabled World, and an Advocate for Disability Rights!

I am delighted to be a part of the IEC Community, serving the Counties of Fauquier and Prince William as well as the Cities of Manassas and Manassas Park. I am Deborah Titus, aka, Debbie.

I was delighted to be offered a temporary position here at IEC, though I expect to move on in October (though our director would be happy to see me stay on a more permanent basis!)

My longtime support for the disabled community began when I was employed by the United State’s Department of the Navy, Naval Air Systems Command Headquarters in Arlington, VA. With the EEOC Headquarters management’s approval, I served as a voluntary chairperson for the Disabled Employees Program for five years. I was an active member of the AIR-01 EEO Committee and a Navy Liaison Representative for twelve years, until I resigned for the sake of my four minor-aged children.

Americans know about the ADA but don’t talk about it much and we hear about the ADA but don’t practice it much. My motto for encouraging, supporting and advocating on behalf of disabled Americans is compatible with my patriotic spirit — All Americans are created equal, and equal rights are meant for people with disabilities too.

This is the reason why I play the role of an Independent Living Advocate, giving our consumers who “walk-in” as much support as I can. So come in or stop by when a need arises, or if you just want to chat.
