New Beginnings by Stephanie George
I am very excited to announce my employment with Independence Empowerment Center as an Independent Living Advocate. Having previously been with the same company for 11 years, I was hesitant to try something new, but I have been warmly welcomed and accepted by all.
For as long as I can remember my parents called me their miracle child. I was born prematurely and not breathing. My parents had a choice; they chose to wait and pray. Having mild CP, I faced many obstacles through the years. Learning to do everyday tasks, things which most others take for granted, was difficult. Not being able to walk until the age of 7 made school challenging. I was always encouraged to do my best and discouraged from using the word “can’t.” As I got older, I learned how to adapt and became more aware of my own physical limitations and more importantly, to the barriers that I encountered in society. With my strong family support system, I have had many opportunities for which I am very thankful.
My father has told me that everything happens for a reason. After many surgeries, doctors, and rehabilitations, I have come to realize that is true. I never gave up or lost hope. I think that my hardships have made me into a stronger person. I worked hard in school and overcame by biggest obstacle, the daily struggle to survive in a system that made few accommodations for my needs. However, I do believe I have learned more from my own life experiences than I could every learn from a book.
My parents say that I was brought into this world to make a difference; now I know what my purpose is, to do great things and make my impression upon the world. I was nevery sure how to accomplish my goals. Now I hope that with the tools and knowledge that IEC can teach me, I will be able to reach my goals and beyond, as well as assist others to do the same.
