Disability Mentoring Day by Stephanie George
“Disability Mentoring Day: Career Development for the 21st Century,” will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 17, 2007.
Disability Mentoring Day (DMD) is officially the third Wednesday of October. DMD promotes career development for students and job seekers with disabilities through job shadowing and hands-on career exploration. With leadership, coordination and resource materials from American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD), local communities around the country organize their own activities to bring students and employers together.Individuals are welcome to take part in this National Day by coming to IEC on Wednesday, October 17th. Come visit our office and experience what it’s like to work in an office that focuses on disability related issues. Please call ahead to let us know that you are coming (703-257-5400).
Last year, IEC received an unexpected call from a person who lives in our community. She asked, “What is this Mentoring Day all about, and can I get in on it?” The call came from Diane Parker, who had seen an ad about Disability Mentoring Day in the Parade Magazine. Diane came in to IEC the very next morning and she spent the day with staff asking questions about employment and disability.
It was a pleasure to spend the day with her. We were all very pleased that she had the tenacity to pick up the phone and make the connection.
If you want to be involved this year, contact us at IEC for more details!
